The Romanians appear to be another Tier 2 victim of scheduling as they face quick turnaround for their second match
Ireland continue their relatively straight forward build up towards the games that matter in Pool D, following up their opening day victory against Canada by taking on the Romanians on Sunday.
Joe Schmidt rings the changes for this one with only three players – Jamie Heaslip, Jared Payne and Keith Earls – keeping their place from that opener.
Opportunity knocks for a host of players to stake a claim for inclusion in the matches against Italy and France. Regulars like Tommy Bowe and Devin Toner, in particular, will be out to reclaim their starting positions on the wing and in the second row respectively, while Cian Healy will be keen to reassert his influence in the front row.
However, nobody selected will want to make a false move as Schmidt’s side appear to have real options, with others ready to step up and take your place should the Kiwi’s exacting standards not be met.
Romania showed they can be a handful in the opening half against France. They have always produced strong scrummagers and the current side are no different, witness their very first scrum against France where Les Bleus blinked first, yielding a penalty against the head.
They also snaffled a couple of French lineouts too, so their set piece will certainly test the Irish, disrupting Schmidt’s side primary source of scores.
Welsh coach Lynn Howells’ side were very much in the game until they were reduced to 14 men late in the first half, allowing France to pounce for a brace of tries.
The reality, however, for Romania is that after a quick turnaround from that midweek match they will most likely be steeling themselves for a real tilt at Canada and possibly the Italians.
That should play into Ireland’s hands and see the Irish pick up a second bonus-point win. Ireland are available at 19/10 to win by 41-50 points inclusive.
The match kicks off at 4.45pm on Sunday, September 27th at Wembley Stadium
