In association with RacingFX, BetBright are delighted to bring you Paul Townend’s Cheltenham Blog, every day of the Festival. Here are Paul’s thoughts for Day three…
It’s very unfortunate to see Ruby out of action after his fall yesterday, it’s never nice to see someone side-lined especially when they’ve just come back from a long period off. With Ruby out, this means there have been a few changes to my rides on Day Three and I’m hoping to make the most of the opportunity I’ve been given in the unfortunate circumstances…
I now ride Invitation Only in the JLT who hopefully has a big chance his form this year has been good and I thought he was going to win the last day at Leopardstown going to the last, but he came up against a very good horse in Monalee and I’ll be hoping for a big run from him today.
I can’t wait to ride Un De Sceaux in the Ryanair he was so god here last year and if any horse at this year’s Festival will love the ground then it’s him – he absolutely loves these conditions. I have ridden him before, so I know what to expect from him and it’s a huge ride to pick up for me.
I am going to stick with Penhillin the Stayers who has been off the track since Punchestown last year, which obviously isn’t ideal coming here, especially with the way the ground is, but he was very impressive in the way in which he won the Albert Bartlett last year, however, it’s a huge ask of him off a far from ideal preparation.
I think The New One is overpriced here and would be a great each-way bet and obviously Barcardys switching back to hurdles is a plus for him – he schooled over hurdles which hasn’t knocked his confidence and he seems to be fine, bringing a high level of form in from his novice season here.
I swap onto Laurina in the Mares Novices Hurdle and I was so impressed with her from what I’ve seen on the track and at home that I can’t wait to ride her. She’ll handle the ground and I’ll be very disappointed if she doesn’t run well here because she is a very good horse.
