York 1.50 – Morando
While I respect the chances of the admirable Lord Glitters and the lightly raced Mustashry, Morando is a huge price here. He ran extremely well in the Gordon Richards, when only a length behind Crystal Ocean, and didn’t run too badly when behind Mustashry at Sandown in a tactically messy race. As has been well documented, Andrew Balding’s horses are now in irresistible form, with many leaving their early season efforts well behind.
York 2.25 – Proschema
He wasn’t far behind Corgi and Making Miracles at Goodwood, having arguably committed for home a bit too early, and is better off at the weights today. In addition, that was his first run off a longish break and he’s entitled to improve. It won’t have escaped your notice, though, that Proschema is three times the price of the horses who he mixed it with at Goodwood. I suspect this track might suit him, and I’ll be backing him each way.
York 3.00 – Suedois
Although Suedois doesn’t have the greatest win strike rate, he runs so consistently at this level and higher and might have landed on a good opportunity here. He comes here off the back of a narrow defeat to the rapidly improving Sir Dancealot at Goodwood, form that took an uplift in last weekend’s Hungerford. Expert Eye is a huge talent when he’s on song, but his overall profile deters me from piling in at short odds.
York 3.40 – Crowned Eagle
Marco Botti’s horse only went down by a head here earlier this season when attempting to give 7 pounds to Hamada. Subsequent events have confirmed that was an outstanding effort, and Crowned Eagle himself has run two excellent races at Ascot and Haydock, all the while looking as though this step up in trip would suit. He comes from a very classy family, and his useful but quirky dam stayed this distance well.
