We may have had pretty bleak weather over the past few weeks, but the first leg of the spring double looks as competitive a Lincoln as you could imagine. There are any number of horses in this race that could yet prove to be top class and two make particular appeal.
The first is the top weight, Lord Glitters, who showed that producing a turn of foot on rain softened ground was no barrier to success when winning at Ascot on Champions Day.
He’s been prepared for this and there seems to be a bit of stable confidence behind him as well.
The other that I quite like is Chelsea Lad who was well fancied for a number of big handicaps last year but was often either inconvenienced by conditions or a little unlucky.
From his new base, Martyn Meade now has a clear shot at this race with a horse who can go well fresh – I like the booking of Oisin Murphy.
On an excellent card at Doncaster, the Cammidge Trophy can go the way of Mr Lupton for Richard Fahey and Tony Hamilton. He spent most of last season running in races which were either too good for him or carrying lumps of weight in big field handicaps and this looks just about his level.
He’s got solid form at Doncaster, he’ll really enjoy the conditions and at 6/1 he rates a decent bet.
In the Doncaster Mile Stakes, I quite like the look of Intern who has a fitness advantage over his rivals and should have received a hefty confidence boost with a wide margin win in a lesser race last time out. Significantly, Ryan Moore rode him then and has opted to keep the ride here.
At Newbury, the Feature race is the Mares’ Hurdle Finale. I like Oscar Rose who won’t find this quite as hot as some of the races she’s been running in this season. She’s only won once but she’s more than capable off this mark and this looks to have been the target.
Later in the afternoon, I’ll be backing Pain Au Chocolat to win the Handicap Chase at 3.50. He’s an enthusiastic racer who’s been given a new lease of life by his current Trainer; this track should suit well, and he gets a positive jockey switch.
1.50 – Mr Lupton – 6/1.
3.00 – Intern 13/2.
3.35 – Lord Glitters to win – 11/2. Chelsea Lad Each Way 14/1.
3.15 – Oscar Rose – 13/2.
3.50 – Pain Au Chocolat 5/1.
