Goodwood 1.50 – Red Verdon
A tricky opener and Red Verdon may provide a bit of value against skinny favourite Mirage Dancer. A horse who slightly lost his way last year when often quite highly tried, Red Verdon has bounced back with three excellent efforts this time around, most notably when chasing home Crystal Ocean at Ascot. A reproduction of that should put him right there, and he should be well suited to this test en route to a possible tilt at the Melbourne Cup.
Goodwood 2.25 – Ostilio
Ostilio was superb in the Britannia, even allowing for a shrewd ride from Silvestre de Sousa. Clearly, he has more on his plate here and has quite a bit to find on official ratings, but there’s no telling where the ceiling of improvement lies for this enthusiastic front-runner, and he’s worth a crack here against some rivals who aren’t in especially good form.
Goodwood 3.00 – South Seas
South Seas ran really well under a big weight last time at Sandown without really getting the rub of the green. He’s evidently a horse who needs a bit of luck – and he’ll have to be ridden for it from his draw – but he’s got a rider full of confidence on his back, and there is no doubt he has the class to take a hand off this mark with ground and trip to suit.
Goodwood 3.35 – Mr Lupton (E/W)
I would dearly love to see Battaash resume winning ways and he would spread eagle these on the best of last season’s form. That said, he hasn’t been quite so good this time, and it might be worth looking at backing Mr Lupton each way or combining him in forecast bets with the favourite. Take Cover, Battaash and Kathy will all blast off pretty hard, which will suit Mr Lupton down to the ground. It was notable that he was able to sit closer to the pace at York last time, yet still, he managed to finish off strongly.
