Fairyhouse is perhaps more synonymous with National Hunt racing, but the Co. Meath venue plays host to plenty of action on the level, including a nice evening card to get stuck into today. It kicks off with a lowly Claiming Race at 5.50pm. We all love quality racing but winners are winners and the 1m2f opener does look to have a solid looking choice within…
Ger Lyons has trained 16 winners from 66 runners at Fairyhouse in the past three years, operating an impressive 24.24% strike rate and producing a level stakes profit of £39 to BFSP. He sends a sextet of runners to one of his local tracks tonight and with the above stat in mind, he is unlikely to walk away empty-handed by the close of play. In the opener, his pair takes up the bulk of the market, but I marginally prefer the claims of the top weight HYPERLAPSE, who ran to an RPR of 70 & Topspeed 62 first time out in 2018 at Dundalk last month. A repeat of that effort back on the turf may just be enough to deny his stablemate Talk Now, who has no weight on her back here but does have the stamina to prove and a poor run last time out to leave behind in order to score.
Assuming Battle Of Jericho will bolt up in the following 6.20pm at long odds-on for Aidan O’Brien, we’ll move onto the 6.50pm maiden stakes over 6f fairly swiftly. The one that stands out here is PALABRES, another Ger Lyons inmate who shaped well when 6th of 14 at Navan on her career debut last month. There are some mixed vibes from the subsequent form of that race, but this interestingly bred filly went off at 5/2f for it and is fancied again here in the market, so they must think a bit of her and if she improves for the outing, this is a winnable second assignment.
The top of the market for the 7.20pm maiden over the same trip of 6f, is a duel between experience & potential, with the once-raced Excellent Spirit just holding sway as the favourite from ELEGANT DRAMA. The first named Willie McCreery trained filly made good late headway from the rear to finish 2nd on heavy ground at the Curragh on debut, but I hope Elegant Drama may get first run on her here and prove a bit too good and too grown up for Excellent Spirit. Another Ger Lyons runner, this 82-rated Dandy Man filly has shown sound early pace to date and have not stayed the trip over 7f at Cork the last day, this step back in distance will help her to finish off the race a bit stronger under regular pilot Colin Keane.
MOJAMBO is the bottom weight in the 7.50pm Handicap over 7f, with a big field of 20 horses above her for this competitive contest. This 3yo Zoffany filly is an eight-race maiden but has caught the eye on more than one occasion and she is weighted to go very well here if getting a little luck in running under her 10lb claiming jockey.
I like two horses at double-figure odds in the 8.20pm. The first is top weight MADEMOISELLE PENNY, who should strip a sharper horse this time, after a promising effort at Dundalk earlier this month. She’s on a workable mark and the drop in trip from 12f to 10f at this stiff track does read well. The other is TENTH AMENDMENT, another horse stepping back in distance and running off a competitive handicap mark if producing his best form.
In the Lucky Last at 8.50pm, Aidan O’Brien’s Athena is another odds-on shot on the card, but this time it could be worth taking a view against the jolly. The choice is Jessica Harrington’s CITY BALLERINA, who ran well at Cork a fortnight ago on her first attempt at 10f. They didn’t go much of a pace there, which meant she found herself in front a long way from home and she was just ran out of it by two closers late on. The daughter of Rip Van Winkle has a likeable way of going about her business and at around 6/1-13/2 this morning, she rates a solid looking each way bet on her fourth
