Day 4 at Glorious Goodwood: A Tidy Looking Double on Friday
It’s been a fabulous Glorious Goodwood meeting so far. On Day 3, we managed 3 winners out of 3 equine beasts mentioned in the BetBright blog, but by far the most satisfying was Wild Illusion, who put her rivals to the sword with a willing, battling performance from the front under William Buick to land the Nassau Stakes. It was last chance saloon for the Dubawi filly, after losing money on her at both Epsom and Royal Ascot, but she came good here to at least claw some earlier stakes back! Today, on the sunny Sussex Downs, there’s a cheeky little double catching my eye…
The Group 2 Qatar King George Stakes at 3.35pm is a strong 5f sprint, in many ways it is every inch worthy of being called a Group 1, with excellent prize money to back up the equine talent declared to post.
The likes of Kachy, Sioux Nation, Mr Lupton, Heartache and Muthmir would add a bit of depth to any top-level sprint, but in this contest, BATTAASH is the horse that stands out like a sore thumb and that fact alone brings the reality of things back into sharp focus. The Charlie Hills-trained 4yo has to shoulder a 3lb penalty, but in terms of pure form and speed figures, he has plenty in hand.
His trainer reports him to be “Moving like a dream” at home. Which is a problem for Battaash rivals — a big one. He’ll bolt up.
Next in the tidy looking double for Friday is LEADING SPIRIT, who scored handsomely and in a good time last Thursday for Charlie Appleby. He follows up under a 6lb penalty for this 6f nursery and he looks several pounds ahead of the handicapper on that bare form. Any improvement on it here and he’ll be extremely difficult to beat.
Appleby is operating a 33% strike rate with all of his runners at the moment. After landing a big race success on Thursday, it’s clear his string are in dangerous form just now and Leading Spirit looks like he should be a class apart from this field. The Great Heir is another in good form and rates as the main threat to our double, but he’s 13lb higher here than his latest success and although improving for Kevin Ryan, this is a much tougher assignment.
Friday Goodwood Double
BATTAASH – 3.35 – Goodwood
LEADING SPIRIT – 4.10 – Goodwood
