The 2018 July Festival is set to see a sun-drenched Newmarket welcome a host of top class equine talent, along with hoards of thrill-seeking, summer loving racegoers descending upon the popular venue for an excellent three days of horse racing action.
On Day 1, action kicks off at 1.50pm with the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy Stakes over 1m5f. A stamina demanding contest worth £150,000 in total prize-money, this is a St Leger trial in all bar name and I quite like the chances of Aidan O’Brien’s GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI, a strong son of Galileo and a horse as consistent as they come. This 3yo colt has been in the first three in his last seven starts since his career debut and is developing a really likeable professionalism in his track escapades.
He won two races in June, before running a cracker in 3rd behind Old Persian and Rostropovich in the King Edward at Royal Ascot, only finding Flag Of Honour too good nine days later at the Curragh.
Giuseppe Garibaldi is steadily developing into a St Leger candidate for Ballydoyle. Given his physical size, he strikes me as a horse that takes plenty of racing to get properly fit and it would be no surprise to me if he found a career best to score here on route to Doncaster.
There is a mix of experience and potential in the 2yo Arqana Stakes at 2.25pm, but the likely betting is favouring potential here with the once raced Legends Of War and twice raced ADVERTISE taking up the bulk of the market.
I’d favour Martyn Meade’s runner to follow up his excellent 2nd behind Calyx in the Coventry Stakes with his second career victory here. The son of Showcasing is a real bull of a juvenile, he travels brilliantly well and I’d fancy him to develop into a proper 6-7f specialist at high Group class level in the seasons to come. He has the best form here and should go very close under Frankie.
In the third Group race of the day at 3.35pm, Sir Michael Stoute’s MIRAGE DANCER holds the aces in the Princess of Wales’s Arqana Racing Club Stakes over 1m4f. This son of Frankel gained some valuable pattern class experience as a 3yo and after a string of promising and generally progressive runs at Listed level lately, the 3yo looks ready to take another dip into Group 2 company.
He really caught the eye in a quality renewal of the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out, where he should’ve finished closer to the winner Monarch’s Glen and this step up in trip can bring about the required improvement to go very close here.
