The transfer window is officially OPEN
It’s official. The transfer window is open. Football fans from all over the world will be eagerly glued to websites, television screens and social media as they desperately hope for their team to sign new players ahead of the upcoming season. In this series, we discuss some of the biggest deals and outrageous rumours throughout the past week and give our own thoughts on the transfer activity. In last week’s edition, we covered Sergio Ramos’ proposed move to Manchester United and gave our thoughts on Liverpool’s early transfer business. This week, we look at a number of incidents that have caught the eye – including one incredible rumour involving one of the Premier League’s mid-table sides.
Chelsea are set to bid for Asmir Begovic after Petr Cech moves to Arsenal
The Stoke City shot stopper has been brilliant for the Potters throughout the past few seasons and he may be about to get the move that he deserves. The 28-year-old is incredibly consistent and has caught the eye with a number of breathtaking performances against the Premier League’s elite clubs. Although it is likely that he will sit on the bench under Belgium international Thibaut Courtois, the Bosnian goalkeeper could still play his fair share of matches in cup competitions and is a competent replacement if the 23-year-old picks up an injury.
Bayern Munich present Bastian Schweinsteiger with an ultimatum
Bayern boss Pep Guardiola has told the Germany international that ‘the future depends on you’ after the 30-year-old has been linked with a number of transfers away from the club this summer. Schweinsteiger, who has played over 300 times for the Bavarians, started just 15 matches for the club last season and could move to Manchester United in the next few months. The midfielder played under current Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal during the Dutchman’s spell in Germany and there is potential for a reunion if Schweinsteiger wants to push for a transfer away from the Allianz Arena.
Inter Milan star Xherdan Shaqiri has been linked with a transfer to Stoke City
In one of the craziest stories of the summer so far, the former Bayern Munich midfielder has reportedly agreed a move to join Mark Hughes’ side in the near future. Reports suggest that Stoke have agreed a club record £12 million fee for the 23-year-old, who could team up with former Barcelona forward Bojan at the Britannia Stadium this season. The Switzerland international is extremely talented and would be a great addition to a much improved Stoke City side.
Portugal international Nani could be on his way to Turkish side Fenerbahce in the near future
Out-of-favour winger Nani could finally leave Manchester United this summer after a fee of £3.5 million was reportedly agreed earlier this week. The Portugal international, who was in contention for the 2011 FIFA Ballon d’Or award, scored 11 goals whilst on loan at Sporting Lisbon last season and the 28-year-old could be about to seal a permanent transfer away from Old Trafford in the coming weeks.
Inter and AC to battle it out for Manchester City’s Stevan Jovetic
The forward struggled to break into the first team at the Etihad Stadium under Manuel Pellegrini last season and the Montenegro international is reportedly keen to work under former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini at Inter Milan next term. The 25-year-old remains a talented prospect and Inter, who secured the signing of Geoffrey Kondogbia from AS Monaco, could make a bid for the striker as they attempt to climb the Serie A table after a disappointing eighth placed finish last season.
Will Chelsea get their man or has Jose Mourinho got to look elsewhere for Cech’s replacement? Also, will Shaqiri join Bojan at Stoke City this summer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
