The transfer window has been busy ahead of the opening weekend
With less than two weeks until the beginning of the new Premier League season, England’s biggest clubs have been active in the transfer market. In last week’s edition, we discussed Sergio Romero’s move to Manchester United and took a look at Mario Balotelli’s proposed move to Sampdoria. This week, we evaluate Rafael’s transfer to Lyon and assessed a former Manchester City striker who has reunited with his previous employer at Inter Milan. With less than a month until the transfer window slams shut, clubs must act quickly to ensure that they acquire all of their targets. In the meantime, we will keep you updated on all the biggest rumours and transfers in the sport.
Gonzalo Higuain has turned down a new deal at Napoli amid interest from Arsenal
The Argentina striker has opted to turn down a contract extension and could leave the Stadio San Paolo this summer. According to reports, the Gunners are intent on purchasing a striker prior to 1st September. A few weeks back, it was suggested that Arsenal were holding out for Karim Benzema but they may attempt to convince Higuain to move to the Emirates Stadium instead. The 27-year-old is one of the deadliest strikers in world football and could be the difference as Arsenal bid to win their first Premier League title since 2004.
Brazil international Rafael has joined Lyon from Manchester United
After six seasons at Old Trafford, Rafael has left Manchester United after completing his transfer to Ligue 1 side Lyon. The Brazilian, who made 96 Premier League appearances for the Reds, won three domestic titles during his time at the club. The writing was on the wall for Rafael when United signed Italy international Matteo Darmian from Torino last month and supporters took to Twitter to wish him good luck. The 25-year-old could return to Old Trafford later this season if the two clubs are drawn together in the UEFA Champions League.
Stevan Jovetic has teamed up with Roberto Mancini at Inter Milan
After struggling to cope with the demands of the Premier League, Manchester City have loaned Stevan Jovetic out for the 2015-16 season. At the start of July, both Milan sides were interested in Jovetic but the opportunity to work with the former Manchester City boss convinced the Montenegro star to choose Inter. The 25-year-old, who had fallen out of favour under Manuel Pellegrini, is a former Fiorentina player and scored 40 goals in 134 matches – a statistic that suggests he could prosper in Italy’s top league once again.
Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has moved to Roma on a one-year loan deal
The Poland international has joined the Serie A side on a season-long loan after Petr Cech was announced as Arsenal’s number one goalkeeper. The Gunners confirmed the signing of Cech – who was pushing for a transfer back in June – last month and the former Chelsea goalkeeper has immediately slotted in as the starting shot stopper. In search of regular first term football, Szczesny has made the transfer to Roma and will attempt to help Rudi Garcia’s side break Juventus’ stranglehold on the Serie A title.
