The transfer window is well and truly underway
Transfer season officially began on 1st July and there have been plenty of early deals as teams look to secure the best players on the market. In last week’s edition, we discussed Toby Alderweireld’s move to Tottenham Hotspur and Yohan Cabaye’s transfer to Crystal Palace. This week, we take a look at Liverpool’s business so far while we evaluate the recent deals at Old Trafford. In one of the most competitive transfer windows in recent memory, supporters have been treated to a number of shock moves and incredible rumours as preseason begins to heat up.
Christian Benteke remains linked with a £32.5 million move to Liverpool
The Aston Villa striker may be the next player to transfer to Anfield this summer after the Reds moved closer to securing the Belgian for £32.5 million earlier this week. Benteke, who scored 16 goals in the final 16 matches of the 2014-15 campaign, remains an exceptionally talented prospect and is more than capable of producing at the top level. At 24 years old, he is an investment for the future and could lead the line for Brendan Rodgers’s side for the next seven or eight years. Importantly, he could provide a ‘Plan B’ for the Reds if they are to continue with Daniel Sturridge.
Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin join Matteo Darmian at Old Trafford
Manchester United were very active in the transfer window last weekend, acquiring the Germany international and Southampton midfielder prior to their preseason tour. Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin will provide some much-needed experience in central midfield and, although the German has never played in the Premier League before, his leadership skills in the dressing room could be crucial if Louis van Gaal’s men are to challenge for the title this season. The Frenchman has shown his ability in England’s top flight throughout the past few years and may play a key role in United’s midfield in the future.
Arturo Vidal may transfer to Bayern Munich from Juventus this summer
The Chile international is one of the most sought after players in world football and, after impressing at the Copa America last month, has attracted attention from Europe’s biggest clubs, including Real Madrid and Arsenal. However, it appears that Bayern Munich will sign the midfielder for an estimated fee of £28 million and Vidal could be the key component of their Champions League aspirations this season.
Roberto Martinez believes James McCarthy will stay at Everton
The Toffees boss has claimed that the midfielder will remain at Goodison Park amid reports of interest from Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City and Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur. The Republic of Ireland international is an exceptionally talented footballer and his stamina in midfield is certainly a key reason why Martinez will be so adamant to keep the 24-year-old at the club this summer. McCarthy, who was signed from Wigan Athletic for £13 million, is not for sale for ‘any price’ according to reports and the Everton star will be looking to make a significant contribution for his side throughout the season.
