Saints can take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the Merseysiders
Everton were beaten 3-0 by Southampton at St Mary’s last season and it could be another long afternoon for the Toffees on the south coast this weekend.
Both teams started their campaign with a 2-2 draw – Southampton at Newcastle and Everton at home to Watford – but it’s the Saints who look in better shape for this contest.
Ronald Koeman’s side have had the benefit of a couple of games in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League to get themselves into the swing. They’ve been scoring plenty of goals and are looking to improve on last year’s solid showing in the Premier League, where they were still in Champions League contention as the spring flowers poked through the soil.
Roberto Martinez has been lamenting the fact that the transfer window extends into the first month of the new season as there is still a chance that he could lose either John Stones or Romelu Lukaku if an inflated bid was received. Everton’s squad already lacks strength and depth and they might struggle to better last year’s 11th place in the table with much likely to rely on whether Ross Barkley can turn in match-winning performances on a regular basis.
Defensively, Everton could be found wanting this season and Southampton are in the form that suggests they’ll take advantage of any slip ups this Saturday. A home win looks a sound bet at our 10/11 with Pelle fancied to find the net again. He is 9/5 in our anytime goalscorer list.
The match kicks off at 3.00pm on Saturday, August 15th at St Mary’s
