Chelsea victory could be final nail in van Gaal’s coffin
This season’s Premier League title race is shaping up to be one of the closest for many years but the chances of either Manchester Utd or Chelsea being involved at the ‘business end’ appear to become more remote with each passing week.
The Blues have, of course, already sacked their manager and United’s Louis van Gaal must be on the brink after a fourth straight defeat at Stoke on Saturday left the Red Devils clinging on to a top six spot only on goal difference.
Both these clubs have the bar set high, of course, so it’s difficult to decide which is in most trouble at present. Chelsea are only 15th and two places above the relegation zone after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Watford. But at least Diego Costa scored a couple of goals to impress interim boss Guus Hiddink – unfortunately he also picked up his fifth yellow card of the season meaning he misses the trip to Old Trafford.
In his absence, we have priced up likely replacement Loic Remy at 6/1 to be First Goalscorer in what is a crucial match for both sides – United’s Juan Mata is 16/5 to be an Anytime Goalscorer against his former club.
Having been given a vote of confidence during the week, he’d labelled the match at the Britannia as a ‘must-win’ but his team ended up being booed off by their own supporters – there may not be too many still on the Dutchman’s side!
Chelsea, however, have not won an away game in the Premier League since August and only the bottom two – Sunderland and Aston Villa – have lost more matches in the top flight this season. But they haven’t lost to United in eight meetings and can put the final nail in van Gaal’s coffin by winning this one at 2/1.
There have been Under (2.5) total goals in Chelsea’s last three games at Old Trafford and that outcome is 5/8 in our Goals Over/Under market. Chelsea are 10/3 to win by 1 in our Winning Margins betting.
The match kicks off at 5.30pm on Monday, December 28th at Old Trafford
