United can keep it tight against under-strength Liverpool
Wayne Rooney has yet to score a league goal for Manchester United this season though did grab a hat-trick in their Champions League tie at Bruges last month. He was also making the headlines for England in midweek, of course, and, now that he’s broken that international scoring record, will be able to concentrate on getting the Red Devils back to winning ways against Liverpool this weekend.
United lost their last match before the international break, at Swansea, despite taking a second-half lead through Juan Mata. But that was their first defeat of the campaign and they did do the double over Brendan Rodgers’ team last season.
Rooney, Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw were team-mates alongside James Milner and Nathaniel Clyne on Tuesday but they’ll be on opposite sides at Old Trafford, where Liverpool have had some notable victories in recent years.
Liverpool spent heavily over the summer with the proceeds from the sale of Raheem Sterling. They won their first two in the Premier League, with Christian Benteke netting the winner against Bournemouth, and then drew at Arsenal. But the wheels came off against West Ham at Anfield and they also had Brazilian Coutinho sent off.
He’ll miss the game at Old Trafford through suspension and captain Jordan Henderson and England team-mate Adam Lallana are still injured so the Reds have their problems, not least the re-emergence of those defensive failings from last season.
United still aren’t the finished article and fans have yet to be convinced that Louis van Gaal is the right manager for the club. But they’ve been hard to break down, in general, even without David de Gea.
