Man City have won all four of their opening games without conceding a goal
Manuel Pellegrini’s men have been in dominant form throughout the early stages of the new Premier League campaign. City, who have finished in the top two in each of the past five seasons, have won every game so far. The Blues have scored 10 goals without reply and already look a class above their title rivals. Can they go the entire season without defeat? While it seems unlikely, City are actually capable of emulating Arsenal’s 2004 “Invincibles” this year. Here are five reasons why.
They have been (and are) the best team in the top flight
Simply put, City have been the best team so far. Pellegrini’s side destroyed defending champions Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium and have earned difficult away victories at West Bromwich Albion and Everton. City have prospered from a solid, organised pre-season regime while many of their rivals are struggling to get going. Arsenal have faltered in front of their own fans while Manchester United are struggling to score. In addition, Liverpool are in transition while Chelsea are looking jaded.
Man City are hungry to win their third title in five years
City are focused on regaining the Premier League crown and are determined to win every single match. While they will not achieve this feat, they are well capable of avoiding defeat throughout the season. City are a solid, reliable defensive unit and will surprise many with their away performances this campaign. They have suffered on the road in the past, but Pellegrini appears to have learned from their mistakes and City look much more organised at the back this term. The Blues are 9/20 to win the title this season.
They invested wisely in the transfer market
City enjoyed a successful transfer window, acquiring a number of key players to bolster their squad. They signed Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph earlier in the summer before Nicolas Otamendi and Kevin de Bruyne arrived at the club in the closing stages of the window. With these four signings, City acquired each of their top summer targets and all are likely to play a key role throughout the remainder of the Premier League campaign.
Man City have already come through difficult away matches
Although it is still early in the campaign, the Blues have shown their mettle in two tricky away fixtures so far. Over the past few years, City’s away form has been their downfall and it almost cost them the title back in the 2013-14 campaign. This season, they have picked up two clean sheets and earned a 3-0 victory over West Brom, as well as a 2-0 scalp against Everton. If City manage to remain solid on the road, they will be hard to break down and stand an excellent chance of equalling Arsenal’s record.
The “fantastic four” are all firing, which is ominous for everybody else
David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany have all enjoyed impressive starts to the new campaign. Silva is the player who makes City purr and the Spaniard is a joy to watch he is on form. Aguero is the deadliest striker in the Premier League and last season’s Golden Boot winner is 43/20 to defend his individual award. Toure appears to be back to his best after a disappointing season while Kompany has been dominant and aggressive in defence. If these four players remain fit for the entire campaign, City stand a brilliant chance of going unbeaten this season.
