In-form Everton more than capable of giving title favourites a fright on home soil
Manchester City will set a club record if they record a ninth successive Premier League victory at Everton this Sunday and we have priced up the new title favourites at 4/6 to extend their 100 per cent start to the campaign.
City signed Argentina defender Nicola Otamendi from Valencia this week to further strengthen their defence. The 27-year-old will already know former Porto team-mate Eliaquim Mangala as well as international colleague Martin Demichelis so should feel right at home at the Etihad – he’s signed a five-year deal.
Otamendi is City’s third high-profile signing of the summer after England’s Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph and Manuel Pellegrini will have been delighted with how his team have gone about wresting back their crown from Chelsea in the first two weeks of the season. Their defeat of the Blues last Sunday was a significant statement of intent and they won’t want to waste that result with a poor performance at Goodison Park, where the pressure has been building on Roberto Martinez.
Romelu Lukaku has also been the subject of transfer speculation but he scored twice in last week’s comprehensive defeat of Southampton and Ross Barkley looks right back to his best having netted in his team’s two games so far.
Everton have been conservative themselves in the transfer window but did fork out more than £4million for Barcelona’s Gerard Deulofeu and Martinez will again be hoping his small squad can punch above their weight and give more exalted opposition a bloody nose on occasion.
Having had a good record against City prior to 2013, Everton have now lost three of their last four against the Sky Blues – January’s meeting at Goodison ended 1-1. City have been impressive to date but Everton may just be overpriced at 7/2 in our 3-way betting and are surely worth a decent bet getting a two-goal start in the European handicap at 4/9 considering they’ve scored five in two matches.
The match kicks off at 4.00pm on Sunday, August 23rd at Goodison Park
