Derby atmosphere could bring about a revival in Liverpool’s fortunes
Brendan Rodgers describes his job at Liverpool as one of rebuilding. That’s probably not want you want to hear as a Reds fan on the eve of a Merseyside derby in which your team are in the unfamiliar position of underdogs.
Liverpool have won just one of their last eight matches and there were boos ringing around Anfield on Thursday at the final whistle following a 1-1 draw with Swiss side Sion.
Admittedly, Rodgers rested a number of his key players but the Reds’ second string should have been good enough to beat modest opposition, especially after taking an early lead.
Liverpool fans will be hoping that the return of Daniel Sturridge sparks a revival in their fortunes. The England striker scored on his comeback against Aston Villa last week and there are signs of promise in a partnership with Danny Ings, though the latter will probably be back on the substitutes’ bench once Christian Benteke is available again.
Everton were without first-choice defenders Seamus Coleman and John Stones at the Hawthorns on Monday but youngsters Tyias Browning and Brendan Galloway stepped up to the plate and the club’s academy is clearly still thriving.
There is no doubt that the Toffees are long overdue a derby victory and this may be their best chance for some time with Romelu Lukaku in great goal-scoring form and their arch-rivals looking out of sorts and conceding far too many. That said, Everton’s defence has hardly been watertight either so we could be in for a few goals – the teams shared six at Goodison in 2013 and four a year earlier. Over 3.5 in our Goals Over/Under market this Sunday is 9/4.
We have Everton at 8/5 for the derby win but this might be too close to call and Liverpool may be better value at 9/5 to enhance their brilliant record at the home of their near-neighbours.
The match kicks off at 1.30pm on Sunday, October 4th at Goodison Park
