Chelsea can show champion quality by ending Liverpool’s unbeaten run
If you believe the press then Jose Mourinho has one match to save his job at Chelsea, though they were saying the same before the midweek defeat at Stoke in the Capital One Cup.
The fact remains that Roman Abramovic trusts Mourinho and will give him every opportunity to turn around the champions’ season. The Special One also looks after his players better than most Premier League managers. He is quite prepared to take the flak so they can concentrate on rediscovering their form.
But there is no doubt that this weekend’s game with Liverpool is a big one. Chelsea have only managed one win in seven in all competitions. After five defeats in the Premier League already, Mourinho is still coming to terms with managing a team that is firmly ensconced in the bottom half of the table. It’s unfamiliar territory for the Portuguese coach, who is accustomed to masterminding title bids. He has handled pressure before – you don’t survive at Real Madrid if you can’t roll with the punches – but this is a different kind of pressure.
Jurgen Klopp’s team haven’t scored more than once in any of their last six. However, they are unbeaten in 10 though have only won two of those matches. Daniel Sturridge is unlikely to feature at Stamford Bridge as he recovers from another injury setback. Christian Benteke sat out the win over Bournemouth on Wednesday and could also be a doubt but Philippe Coutinho, Lucas and Adam Lallana should all return.
Liverpool have not beaten Chelsea in eight attempts but probably couldn’t be playing the champions at a better time. This is a must-win game for Mourinho’s men, however, and they can respond to the challenge and inflict a first defeat on the Merseysiders in Klopp’s reign at Evens.
Expect a tight game, however, given Liverpool’s defensive resilience. Under 2.5 in our Goals Over/Under market is 4/5. Chelsea are 11/2 to win 1-0 in our Correct Score betting.
The match kicks off at 12.45pm on Saturday, October 30th at Stamford Bridge
