Chelsea set to resurrect their domination of Arsenal after early blips
Despite suffering their worst start to a top-flight season in almost 30 years, Chelsea were the only English team to win in the opening round of Champions League matches during the week, beating Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-0 in Group G.
This weekend’s opponents Arsenal lost to Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia on the same night and played almost an hour with 10 men following the sending-off of Olivier Giroud. Jose Mourinho thinks that his team should be favourites to beat the Gunners and get their domestic campaign up and running – we agree and have priced up the Blues at 13/10 to take all three points in the lunchtime kick-off, which has probably done the Gunners few favours following their exertions on Wednesday.
There is little love lost between Mourinho and opposite number Arsene Wenger but both managers know that this is a match that neither team can really afford to lose with Manchester City having already built up a significant head of steam in the title race.
Wenger must decide which of his players have the highest energy levels after the debacle in Croatia. He made six changes in Zagreb but none of those who were recalled did much to suggest they should be playing more regularly. But Theo Walcott looks certain to be back in the Gunners’ starting line-up after scoring his team’s consolation on Wednesday while Petr Cech is unlikely to miss out on an emotional return to Stamford Bridge.
But Wenger has never bettered Mourinho is a Premier League match and Arsenal haven’t even managed a goal against Chelsea in their last four meetings in a meaningful fixture, though they did beat the Blues in the Community Shield at Wembley last month.
Chelsea’s confidence should have been restored in midweek after a miserable run and normality could be resumed at Stamford Bridge with Arsenal priced up at 23/10 to score 0 in our Goals Away Team market.
The match kicks off at 12.45pm on Saturday, September 19th at Stamford Bridge
