Posh looking for back to back victories this weekend
A win is a win and last week’s victory at Notts County, while unexpected, has probably eased a little of the pressure on Darren Ferguson.
The trick is to now follow up against struggling Yeovil and end a dismal run of results at the ABAX Stadium. Peterborough fans haven’t seen their side win at home since the middle of October and haven’t seen anyone in a United shirt find the net in a home league match since Joe Newell scored a consolation in stoppage time at the end of a 2-1 defeat by Swindon in November.
The Glovers may be at the wrong end of the table but United’s record against teams in similar positions hasn’t been great and they’ll need to take their chances against Gary Johnson’s side, who are actually unbeaten in three and are possibly a little better than their league position suggests.
They also won the reverse fixture at Huish Park thanks to a late goal from Joel Grant.
We’ve priced up Posh at Evens to end that miserable home run but fans will want more proof before deciding whether or not the team has turned the corner.
Getting the first goal undoubtedly helped at Meadow Lane last week and it was good to see Marcus Maddison on the score-sheet again. But there is no getting away from the fact that County were poor on the day, yet almost rescued a point thanks to yet more indecisive defending by United’s back four – it’s a good job that on-loan keeper Scott Loach was on form!
Three points shouldn’t gloss over the problems that still exist at the back and Yeovil are fighting for their lives so won’t make it easy for Peterborough but Conor Washington showed last week what can happen when you work hard and Christian Burgess went some way towards making amends for the mistake that had cost his team a point at Port Vale a week earlier.
Another victory would see United back in the hunt for a play-off place but Yeovil’s better recent form suggests they may be capable of getting a draw at 12/5 if they turn this into a battle. The Draw/Draw on the Half Time/Full Time is 19/5.
The match kicks off at 3.00pm on Saturday, January 31st at the ABAX Stadium.
