Posh might be poised to end their winless run in the league
Maybe a draw against another mid-table side in Doncaster appeased some but the general feeling among Posh fans is that Darren Ferguson and his players must do better in the New Year.
That draw against Rovers in the last match of 2014 did halt a depressing run of home defeats but hardly suggested that United had turned the corner, though Marcus Maddison did enough to suggest he’s not far off his best again after injury and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing caused problems after coming off the bench.
The latter has yet to start a league game this season but his turn can’t be far away with United still struggling for goals at the ABAX Stadium – Aaron McLean has yet to really light the blue touch paper since returning to the club on loan.
There is one piece of good news, however, as Jon Taylor has returned to training and could be ready for first-team action in the near future.
Peterborough and Colchester United have met 66 times previously and it is usually the side that’s at home which comes out on top. That was the case when the teams clashed at the Weston Homes Community Stadium in the second round of the FA Cup just before Christmas when a stoppage time goal from U’s midfielder George Moncur proved the difference between the sides.
But that was a rare victory for Tony Humes’ team, who are only one place off the bottom of League One – only Crewe have conceded more goals in the division this season.
They could also be set to lose experienced Latvian defender Kaspars Gorkss and Posh have already beaten them in the league this term.
Ferguson’s team will probably never have a better chance to end their winless run in the league and are worth backing at 5/6.
Colchester have just avoided the drop in the last two seasons but the trap door is wide-open again and they should be sent back to Essex pointless if Peterborough can keep the ball away from the U’s top scorer Freddie Sears. A home win by a one-goal margin is 53/20.
The match kicks off at 3.00pm on Saturday, January 10th at the ABAX Stadium.
