Posh need to be careful against the back-to-form Spireites
It’s inevitable that a winning run has to come to an end some time and maybe last Saturday’s exertions caught up with Peterborough’s players at Preston on Tuesday.
That said, Simon Grayson’s team are increasingly looking like a Championship side masquerading as League One opposition so perhaps a 2-0 defeat was no disgrace for Posh, though they never really threatened the North End goal on the night.
Dave Robertson will have rallied his troops, however, with crucial games coming thick and fast and that Deepdale defeat didn’t really alter the fact that United are still within touching distance of the play-offs as those sides around them also dropped points.
Robertson does have option if he wants to change things around for the visit of Chesterfield with Kyle Vassell, Christian Burgess and Shaun Brisley all pressing for a recall. But he’s again likely to rely on the personnel and formation that’s served him well in recent weeks, with Michael Bostwick anchoring the midfield and providing the platform for Luke James and Conor Washington to work their magic around the opposition’s penalty area.
Posh lost 3-2 against the Spireites at the Proact Stadium on Boxing Day and Paul Cook’s side are probably one of the best footballing outfits in League One. But they’ve lost their way a little since losing leading scorer Eoin Doyle, who scored the winner in the first meeting with United, to Cardiff City in the transfer window.
Sheffield Wednesday loanee Caolan Lavery had been filling his place but has been recalled early by his parent club so Sam Clucas had to play up front against Gillingham on Tuesday, though he did score twice.
Chesterfield will be hoping the influential Sam Morsy will be fit for the trip to the ABAX Stadium and this has the makings of a thrilling affair with both teams having plenty to play for.
There are only two points separating the teams in the table and the teams’ contrasting styles make this a difficult match to weigh up but the bet could be the draw at 9/4 with over 1.5 and the draw at 31/10 in the Matchbet + Totals market.
The match kicks off at 3.00pm on Saturday, March 21 at the ABAX Stadium.
