Monaco’s defensive frailties offers hope for Tottenham in France
Tottenham top Group J after beating FC Qarabag on matchday one at White Hart Lane but free-scoring Monaco will be a stiffer test at the Stade Louis II.
Spurs’ defeat of Manchester City on Sunday was a huge result in terms of self-belief and it’s forced many who thought that Mauricio Pocchetino’s team were destined for another season as also-rans to think again.
The Londoners have now won four of their last five after a ponderous start to the campaign – their only reverse coming in the Capital One Cup against Arsenal. Pocchetino looks well on the way to finding the right balance in his team but did field several fringe players against Qarabag and will make changes again on the Cote D’Azur.
Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier, Andros Townsend and Tom Carroll could all be among those recalled to face the French side while Michel Vorm could replace Hugo Lloris in goal. But the manager can’t afford to treat Monaco with disrespect given their pedigree and the fact that they’ve been rattling in the goals themselves lately.
Leonardo Jardim’s team have scored eight times in their last three games. But they’ve also been vulnerable at the back – Guincamp held them to a 3-3 draw at the weekend – and their coach is aware of the threat posed by Spurs, especially if Harry Kane starts.
The team from the Principality have won six of their last 12 European games against English opposition and knocked Tottenham’s arch-rivals Arsenal out of the Champions League last year in the last 16, though were beaten by the Gunners at the Stade Louis II.
Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva was one of the stars of the European U21 Championships in the summer and could be a handful for the Spurs’ defence but the Premier League side can escape with a draw in France (11/5 in our Full Time Result betting) – Both Teams to score is 19/20 and Over 2.5 in our Total Goals market is 6/5.
The match kicks off at 6.00pm on Thursday, October 1st at the Stade Louis II
