Celtic may have to settle for a point against star-studded Fenerbahce
Celtic proved a few people wrong when drawing 2-2 against Ajax in Amsterdam two weeks ago and are hoping to build on that hard-earned point when they entertain another well-known European club, Fenerbahce, at Celtic Park this Thursday.
The Turkish side arrive in Glasgow already on the back foot in the Europa League after surprisingly losing 3-1 against Molde. They were also knocked off the top of the Super Lig after losing to arch-rivals Besiktas in the Istanbul derby on Sunday but Vitor Pereira’s team shouldn’t be underestimated.
The Fenerbahce squad features former Manchester United stars Robin van Persie and Nani as well as Liverpool loanee Lazar Markovic. Portuguese midfielder Raul Mereiles and defender Bruno Alves are other seasoned campaigners while attacking flair is provided by Brazilians Fernandao and Souza.
The Bhoys have a solid home record in Europe, having won five of their last seven ties and only losing one, but their manager admits that they will need to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to get a result against Fenerbahce. His team squandered several chances when held by Hearts at Celtic Park at the weekend. Winger James Forrest and top scorer Leigh Griffiths could be key players as the Turks’ defence doesn’t look the quickest.
Neither side can really afford to lose this tie if they wish to remain competitive in Group A and that could lead to a cagey encounter. We are offering 95/40 for the draw in our Full Time Result betting. Two goals in our Total Goals market is 13/5 with Celtic/Draw in our Half Time/Full Time betting at 11/1.
The match kicks off at 8.05pm on Thursday, October 1st at Celtic Park
