Liverpool might require a vintage European performance to get a result in Bordeaux
Liverpool are probably going into their Europa League Group B games with more hope than expectation and face a tricky start against Bordeaux in France.
Les Girondins needed away goals to qualify for the group stages of the competition after losing the second leg of their tie with Kairat in Kazakhstan last month but produced a terrific performance to draw 2-2 with PSG in the Parc des Princes last Saturday and will cause the Reds plenty of problems if in the same mood.
Willy Sagnol has a multi-national squad at his disposal and big things are expected of striker Diego Rolan. He was spearheading the Uruguay attack in Luis Suarez’ absence and is still only 24. Captain Ludovic Sane is a regular for Senegal while experienced midfielder Jaroslav Plasil has won almost 100 caps for the Czech Republic and is hoping to play in his fourth European Championships next year.
Brendan Rodgers’ team have managed only three goals in their five Premier League matches to date and Christian Benteke has scored two of those. But the Belgian striker has been left at home for this one, along with James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne, Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Lucas so there could be rare starts for Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure. Divock Origi is expected to make his Liverpool debut in attack.
A draw (11/5) would probably be a good result for Liverpool in Bordeaux given their continuing injury problems and recent form but the improving home side are surely worth a bet in our Handicap betting at 8/15 getting a goal start.
The match kicks off at 6.00pm on Thursday, September 17th at the Nouveau Stade
