Wednesday looking to steal a march on play-off rivals
Sheffield Wednesday got emphatically back on track against Wolves last Sunday and are now just a point off the play-offs.
Carlos Carvalhal was delighted with the performance against Kenny Jackett’s struggling side, especially as Wednesday had fallen behind to an early penalty. But a double from Fernando Forestieri and further goals from Daniel Pudil and Gary Hooper, his second in two matches, gave the Owls an easy victory and their margin of success could have been greater if they’d converted a few more of the chances they’d created.
Birmingham, however, may put up more resistance than their Midland’s counterparts. City ended a five-match winless run with a narrow victory over Cardiff last Saturday – the Bluebirds had shared four goals with Wednesday a week earlier.
One worry is that Wednesday have yet to beat any side this season that are currently in the top 10 – they’ve drawn their last five and we have that outcome at 12/5 in our Full Time Result betting this Saturday – but it’s only a matter of time before that stat is laid to rest.
Birmingham haven’t won at Hillsborough since 2006 with the Owls winning two and drawing two of the last four matches between the sides in South Yorkshire, though City were victorious in the last Boxing Day fixture between the teams in 2002. A Sheffield Wednesday win this time is 10/11.
With Forrestieri and Hooper both among the goals lately, we have priced that pair at 6/1 and 11/2 respectively to be First Goalscorer against Birmingham City. Wednesday have not conceded in three of their last five games against Saturday’s opposition and we are offering 6/5 that they keep another clean sheet, though they’ve only managed that once in their last eight in all competitions.
The match kicks off at 3.00pm on Saturday, December 26th at Hillsborough
