Wednesday’s new-look team already showing signs of gelling
There’s no getting away from the fact that Sheffield Wednesday’s results at Hillsborough last season were abysmal.
But everyone starts with a clean slate under a new manager. Unfortunately, Carlos Carvalhal will have to deliver instant success if fans are going to justify the new ticket price structure at Hillsborough which has seen first opponents Bristol City mount an official boycott.
Robins’ fans’ groups have described ticket prices as ‘unreasonable’ and there has been discontent, too, among home fans at a big rise at the cost of attending Wednesday home matches. Some of those fans were also disgruntled by the manner in which previous coach Stuart Gray was dismissed. He’d done a good job of stabilising the club but owner Dejphon Chansiri wanted his own man in and the former Besiktas coach has rapidly set about overhauling the squad.
There are nine new faces in the first-team squad this season, though Lewis McGugan was on loan from Watford in the spring. Striker Lucas Joao was the latest addition and he is reunited with former Nacional team-mate Marco Matias. Burnley winger Ross Wallace and goalkeeper Lewis Price were among other summer signings and it will be interesting to see how Carvalhal integrates the old with the new. The Owls will certainly be looking to get off to a flier against their newly-promoted opponents.
Steve Cotterill’s side won’t find it as easy to win games this season and are pinning their hopes on getting another 12 months out of veteran Aaron Wilbraham. The former Crystal Palace man will be without strike partner Kieren Agard for a few weeks as the latter has undergone knee surgery and City’s resources already look stretched.
It will take time for Wednesday’s new players to get used to life in the Football League but they’ll be kicking themselves if they don’t make a winning start at 5/4 with the away side likely to bring few travelling supporters. The Draw/ Sheffield Wednesday on the Half Time/Full Time is 19/5.
The match kicks off at 3.00pm on Saturday, August 8th at Hillsborough
