Wednesday aiming to keep up the momentum at high-flying Boro
Carlos Carvalhal would not be the first overseas coach to bemoan the busy Christmas schedule in English football but he’ll be a happy man if his Sheff Wed team can follow up their excellent Boxing Day win against Birmingham by getting a positive result at Middlesbrough.
We have priced up Wednesday at 49/10 to win at the Riverside and the draw is 14/5 in our Full Time Result betting – the Owls have drawn their last six matches against current top six sides so won’t wilt against Aitor Karanka’s high-fliers.
But they have to get a poor performance against Boro at Hillsborough out of their system. The Teessiders won 3-1 in South Yorkshire in August in what was one of the low points of Wednesday’s season so far. But that was a first defeat in five meetings for Sheffield Wednesday against Boro and they drew 1-1 at the Riverside last season.
They’ve had more than a week to recover since ending Brighton’s unbeaten record as their scheduled match at Blackburn on Saturday was postponed. While Wednesday didn’t have to work hard to beat Birmingham, there are certain to be a few aching limbs and this is an important match for both teams at the top end of the table.
But Boro’s much-admired defence will have to be on top form to keep out Fernando Forestieri, who has now scored five in his last four for Wednesday. The Italian now has 10 Championship goals this season and his cult-hero status remains untarnished. There were almost 30,000 at Hillsborough on Saturday and a large following will be heading up the A1 on Monday afternoon to see if their favourites can keep up the momentum.
Forestieri is 10/3 to be an Anytime Goalscorer and we have Yes for Both Teams to Score in this intriguing clash at 23/20, even though at least one side has failed to score in Boro’s last seven home matches – No is 5/8.
The match kicks off at 5.15pm on Monday, December 28th at the Riverside Stadium
