Our man Nick Luck is currently in the States covering some high class action but he’s still on hand for a look at the weekend racing at home….
America, with the Arlington Million in Chicago giving way to Saratoga for the inaugural Equestricon convention, followed up with a first trip to Del Mar, home to this year’s Breeders’ Cup.
Tonight’s big race is the Pacific Classic, whose headliner is obviously Arrogate. Will this be glorious redemption for one of the very best of the recent era, or is his San Diego flop last time indicative that he no longer has the desire to race.
If you can stay awake to watch this compelling race, you might do well to back Bob Baffert’s other runner Collected, who has looked super-impressive the last twice. He’s a horse blessed with a load of speed & has been training really well at Del Mar.
I’ve been following proceedings at home in the meantime, and – with York round the corner – we’ve an opportunity to head into the delights of next week with plenty of readies.
For all I’ve been a bit rude about him before, Frontiersman is a pretty fair price to land Newbury’s Geoffrey Freer. It is true he hangs under pressure, but a slightly softer surface, weaker opposition & a more forward position early should see him through here.
The 7f Handicap can go the way of Noble Peace. A fine second in the Goodwood swamp last time shows his versatility as regards ground, and he’s been moving forward little-by-little all year.
The Queen’s Learn by Heart can take the Denford Stud race for 2yos. He’s a powerful Frankel who made a decent impression when breaking his maiden last time. Frankel has had an excellent week in Stakes races & can follow up here with another strong galloper.
Speaking of big and powerful, Spangled is a sporting selection in the day’s feature, the Hungerford Stakes. It’s true that she’s below the best of these on all known evidence, but she should now have filled her gargantuan frame. With doubts surrounding the front of the market – and with the trainer flying along at present – she could easily improve enough to figure.
Nick’s four for Saturday…
1.50 Newbury – Learn By Heart
2.25 Newbury – Frontiersman
3.00 Newbury – Noble Peace
3.35 Newbury – Spangled e/w
