It feels as though we’re marking time, waiting and waiting for the weather to improve and the best of the Flat horses to emerge at the same time as enjoying some quality spring jumping; fingers crossed we can get some sunshine for Aintree next week.
Either way, I’ll be blogging for BetBright during the Grand national meeting with some video content in the mix as well – don’t say you weren’t warned.
This feels almost like an ‘extra’ weekend, with a second consecutive feature Saturday on Kempton’s All Weather sharing centre stage with what is a decent card at Kelso, but one that is likely to be a mud spattered slugfest in keeping with much of the rest of the season.
I’ll be on Racing UK duty at Kempton, and am particularly looking forward to the Snowdrop Fillies’ Stakes. This has drawn a highly representative field for the grade, and I’m hoping Jeremy Noseda’s La Figlia – 10/3 can break her maiden in style. She’s a gem on pedigree – by Frankel out of Finsceal Beo – and shaped really nicely in a Listed race on the Rowley Mile last year. A repeat of that should see her placed at least, she’s open to bags of progress and her main form-threat Smart Call – 11/4 may find this mile on the sharp side.
The other selection at Kempton is Amomentofmadness – 11/4 at 2.05. He enjoys a significant pull at the weights with Tomily 5/1 from their running last time, a race which he might well have won if he had broken on terms. With a good break, he should be able to snaffle the rail from stall 3, and I fancy him to use his brazen speed to good effect.
At Kelso, I like the improving Reverant Cust 8/1 to progress again in the 2.25. He is a horse that needs to be produced late – and might not be the easiest ride – but he travels smoothly, is in great heart, handles the ground and represents a trainer that has repeatedly shown he can deliver the goods.
Reverent Cust faces largely exposed rivals, of whom Nietzsche is by far the most interesting taking a fairly significant drop in class.
In Kelso’s feature, Chic Name – 6/1can give trainer Richard Hobson big-race success a week before he saddles Shantou Flyer in the Randox Health Grand National. The selection has run two excellent races for the trainer this time round – first when third to Elegant Escape at Exeter and latterly when running a blinder in a stronger-than-usual edition of the X-country at Cheltenham. He’s up to running against good horses and he’s receiving lumps of weight here with James Bowen’s extra 3lbs a juicy bonus.
2.05 – Amomentofmadness (11/4)
3.15 – La Figlia (10/3)
2.25 – Reverant Cust (8/1)
3.00 – Chic Name (6/1)
