We’ve another excellent day of racing at Newmarket today and BetBright’s Racing ambassador, Nick Luck, is looking ahead to the second day of the July Festival…
Newmarket 1.50 – Maksab
David Egan rode a canny race against the far rail yesterday and might do the same again here, as this relatively progressive three year old has some tactical speed in a small and rather uncompetitive field. Maksab has already built up a good record at this track and can go well again.
Newmarket 2.25 – Gossamer Wings
The Queen Mary form has been underrated by the market here, but this filly ran a screamer at Ascot despite a far from ideal run through the race. On that evidence, she ought to be well served by a step up to 6 furlongs, and there is no reason to think she won’t progress again.
Newmarket 3.00 – Chief Ironside
A small field, but a tidy race with plenty of progressive horses. The answer might be Chief Ironside, whose forward style of racing in a contest with limited pace angles might serve him well. He has already proven himself at the track and on fast ground, and I like the booking of Jamie Spencer here.
Newmarket 3.35 – Clemmie
It is asking an awful lot of any filly to beat the Alpha Centauri we saw at Ascot, but she’s 4/11 and I couldn’t recommend backing her at that price, particularly given she’s entitled to recoil off such a massive effort. By contrast, the vibes were that Clemmie wasn’t quite ready at Ascot, yet she still travelled as though all her ability was in tact until the final couple of furlongs. Given her liking for the track in last year’s Duchess of Cambridge, she may well take another step forward here.
