Ascot 2.30 – Nate the Great (ew)
I’m unconvinced the Chesham has much depth and it might be worth backing this horse each way off the back of a very smooth debut success at Carlisle. Archie Watson holds the son of Nathaniel in pretty high regard and – although the form of his win was ordinary – he moved like a pretty smart horse.
Ascot 3.05 – Crystal Ocean
He might be too short a price to tempt many in, but I’m not sure that I’d want to lay him at much bigger than 8/15 either. There are no real negatives: ground, track and trip all suit well and his stable could hardly be going better this week.
Ascot 3.40 – Mutawaffer
I think this horse should be favourite, but he’s drifted on an overreaction to perceived stable form. He was a real eye catcher here first time and then bolted up in a traditionally strong maiden at Goodwood (form franked since), showing plenty of speed. He was fairly high on the shortlist for the Coventry, so should be very competitive in a race like this.
Ascot 4.20 – Bound for Nowhere
Wesley Ward’s colt finished an excellent 4th in last year’s strong Commonwealth Cup despite having a torrid trip under David Flores. Joel Rosario takes the ride this time and the horse comes here in sparkling form having demolished Bucchero (ran well on Tuesday) in the Shakertown at Keeneland last time. A strict interpretation of that should see him in the mix.
Ascot 5.00 – Tupi & Blue de Vega
Ryan Moore rides Tupi, who looks very well handicapped now, particularly on his run in last year’s Jubilee. As for Blue de Vega, this stiff 6 furlongs will suit him markedly better than the flat 5s he’s been running over – he’s a high class horse on his day and this might be the perfect test for him.
Ascot 5.35 – Pallasator
This old boy has had a long and noteworthy career, yet may still have something to offer as he makes his first Flat start for Gordon Elliott. Considering his quirks, he looked much more amenable over hurdles than he might have done and ran to a pretty decent rating on more than one occasion.
