Goodwood 1.50 – Pivoine (Each Way)
A tough handicap for starters, but I was very taken by the Sandown race in which Alfarris was 2nd & Pivoine 4th – the winner, Melting Dew, will be winning Pattern races soon and the time was very strong.
Pivoine was only a half length behind Alfarris, yet really tanked into the race, possibly doing a bit too much too soon. From his good draw, he should get a good position and – granted the all important Goodwood luck-in-running – can go really well at a decent price. He won’t mind if there’s any more rain.
Goodwood 2.25 – Blonde Warrior (Each Way)
An unusually open looking Vintage Stakes, and one in which Blonde Warrior might have been slightly overlooked by the market. Admittedly, his two victories have come in small fields in minor races, but he looked very smart at Doncaster last time when brushing aside a horse who subsequently ran well in a very hot maiden at Newbury. In addition, he has a classier pedigree than the majority of these.
Goodwood 3.00 – Suedois
An amazing horse who seems to thrive on racing, Suedois made two very good milers – Beat The Bank and Lord Glitters – pull out every stop to go by him at Ascot last time. With all his sprinting experience, we know that Suedois has the tactical speed for a test like this, but – most importantly – the consistency of performance at the highest level. Of the others, D’bai – back up to a more suitable distance here – makes the most appeal.
Goodwood 3.35 – Torcedor
I love Stradivarius, but he had a hard race at Ascot and only had less than a length over Torcedor at the line – put it this way, I think the disparity in price is too great, the drop back to 2 miles will suit both horses equally well and – crucially – the slightly more forgiving surface with the recent rainfall can help Torcedor get closer. The fly in the ointment could be Idaho, who would look a massive price on the best of his form and could yet improve at the trip.
