Two days down, three to go at Glorious Goodwood and Nick Luck is on hand to preview Thursday’s card for BetBright…
The Andrew Balding trained, Here Comes When, was the surprise winner in the Sussex Stakes yesterday. After dual 2000 Guineas winner, Churchill, was withdrawn due to soft ground, all eyes were on Ribchester who rallied towards the end but didn’t quite have enough to get the better of Here Comes When.
1.50 3-y-o Handicap
The opening race can go the way of Good Omen for David Simcock and Jamie Spencer.
The rider has a good rapport with this horse, who got going a little bit late at Ascot, where the ground may have been too quick.
Wins either side of that confirms this remains a progressive three-year-old who has the right sort of profile for this race.
2.25 Markel Insurance Fillies’ Stakes
This is an open race which can go the way of the progressive Melodic Motion.
Ralph Beckett has a great record at this fixture and this filly was really sparkling last time. As a half-sister to Andrew Balding’s very useful, Here Comes When, she should relish the underfoot conditions.
3.00 Qatar Richmond Stakes
This would be Cardsharp’s to lose, even under the penalty, were it not for the fact that I don’t think he’ll be quite as effective if the rain comes, and as such, I’m prepared to take a chance on Barraquero, for the somewhat resurgent yard of Brian Meehan.
The substance of the Chepstow win is nothing to write home about but the manner of victory could scarcely have been more impressive – he even had enough in the tank to get rid of his rider after the line!
3.35 Nassau Stakes
There’s no doubt that Winter has been one of the star performers of the season and there really is very little negative to say about her.
Having said that, she has a busy time of things in stepping up in distance (which is not certain to suit on the dam side of her pedigree) and she’s going to tackle softer ground than she has done all year.
Sobetsu was devastatingly impressive in the Prix Saint Alary on very soft ground. She was much closer than ideal to a stern pace in the Oaks on her next run, but has been freshened up since and can give Winter a fright here.
I have huge respect for Shutter Speed who showed a devastating turn of foot to get to the front in the Prix de Diane and perhaps got there a little soon, but it seems notable that Frankie Dettori has deserted her for So Mi Dar who comes back off a long absence.
Queens Trust is a filly who I have enormous respect for, but I feel she must have fast ground.
1.50 – 3-y-o Handicap – Good Omen
2.25 – Markel Insurance Fillies’ Stakes – Melodic Motion
3.00 – Qatar Richmond Stakes – Barraquero
