Some welcome respite yesterday at Goodwood, both from the rain and the apparent impossibility of finding a winner.
It was great to see Winter restore some order to proceedings in the Nassau, and equally fascinating to hear connections considering a shot at the Arc.
The ground should dry considerably today, but we’re still looking at a soft surface.
3.35 King George Stakes
Battaash was incredibly impressive at Sandown last time, yet remains a fair price here, as though we shouldn’t quite be prepared to believe he’s the real deal.
My own view is that he’s really grown up since last year, and is just beginning to fulfil his potential.
He is well drawn today if the far side remains the place to be, and he should get a lovely tow into the race from the brazen speedball Take Cover.
1.50 Glorious Stakes
This is a tough little race, which revolves around whether Poet’s Word can prove as effective on a softer surface. If he can, he could well win decisively, but I think there is a better bet at the prices.
That comes in the shape of Scarlet Dragon, who has plenty of form on soft ground and steps back up in trip after two respectable efforts over 10fs. This is a big opportunity for Hollie Doyle, but she is more than up to the task.
2.25 Thoroughbred Stakes
Some guesswork involved as regards the ground for quite a few of these, but not for Make Time, who appears to have a distinct preference for a soft surface.
David Menuisier has recovered from a lean spell lately, and his stable star can give him a famous triumph at his local track. Make Time made short work of a fair field at Sandown last time, and is a pretty reasonable price today.
If there’s a joker in the pack here, it could well be Escobar, a highly exciting 2yo whose promising comeback run was not matched by a less illustrious effort at Ascot. If forgiven his latest start, his best form gives him a good shout, for all he’s unproven on the ground.
3.00 Betfred Mile
GM Hopkins can give Andrea Atzeni more Goodwood cheer. This is a notoriously challenging ride, but we know he excels in big fields, we know he’s in good form, and we know he’s well drawn.
There aren’t too many obvious improvers in here and a reproduction of his Sandown 2nd could nearly get the job done.
1.50 – Scarlet Dragon
2.25 – Make Time
3.00 – GM Hopkins
3.35 – Battaash
