Liverpool v Sevilla Betting Preview
Something has to give in Basel this Wednesday as Liverpool take on Sevilla in the Europa League Final.
Neither side has ever lost a final in the competition and its predecessors, the Fairs Cup and UEFA Cup.
Sevilla are four-time winners of Europe’s secondary competition – a record. They lifted the trophy in 2006, 2007, 2014 and 2015. History will be made if they win it for third successive year. Liverpool were successful in 1973, 1976 and 2001 and, of course, have also won the European Cup/Champions League five times.
The Reds have won eight of their 11 major finals in Europe and have never lost a decider to a Spanish side. But head coach Jurgen Klopp has lost four cup finals in a row – three with Borussia Dortmund and one with Liverpool – so is in need of a change of luck.
It’s not been a great domestic season for either side but a very big carrot dangles alongside the Europa League trophy nowadays. The winners gain automatic entry into next season’s Champions League and the financial rewards that qualification guarantees.
Liverpool have lost only one of their 14 matches in the Europa League this season – winning six and drawing seven – that was against Villarreal in the first leg of their semi-final. They have had 11 different scorers in this season’s competition, more than any other team, but Klopp does need to decide whether or not skipper Jordan Henderson is ready to start. The England midfielder has played only 20 minutes in the last six weeks after being injured in the first leg of his team’s quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund.
Sevilla coach Unai Emery will be hoping striker Kevin Gameiro can be his team’s match winner again. The French striker has scored seven times in his last eight Europa League matches and was on the score-sheet 16 times in La Liga this season. He will have to be tamed if Liverpool are to lift the trophy but the Reds’ defence have been resolute throughout in the competition.
St Jakob-Park could have been filled twice over for this final but there will still be an excellent atmosphere generated in Basel. We have 80 markets available for this crucial game and are siding with Liverpool to stop Sevilla re-writing the record books.
The Merseysiders have arguably overcome tougher opposition to reach the final. There is no Anfield factor this time but the 15,000 dressed in red will make plenty of noise and Liverpool just look that bit stronger all round than their opponents. The likely front three of Daniel Sturridge, Phillipe Coutinho and Adam Lallana will trouble a Sevilla defence that is far from impregnable and the Premier League side are 7/5 to win in 90 minutes in our Full Time Result betting.
As we’ve already underlined, Liverpool can score from all over the pitch but we fancy the mercurial Lallana to find the net at some point (10/3 to be an Anytime Goalscorer). The Draw/Liverpool is 4/1 in our Half Time/Full Time market with the Reds priced up at 11/2 to win by 2 in our Winning Margins list.
The match kicks off at 7.45pm on Wednesday, May 18 at St Jakob-Park, Basel
