Villarreal v Liverpool Betting Preview
Is it ironic that the team representing the birthplace of the Beatles will have to sink the Yellow Submarine if they are to reach the final of this season’s Europa League?
The brightly-coloured submersible is the nickname of Villarreal and they’ve torpedoed some big names at their home, El Madrigal, over the years.
The Primera Liga side are bidding to reach their first-ever major European final. Liverpool, of course, have been there and done that, though not this current crop of players and manager Jurgen Klopp has major injury concerns ahead of the first leg of their semi-final.
Christian Benteke, Emre Can, Joe Gomez, Danny Ings, Jordan Henderson and Divock Origi are all out. The latter pair have been big players in Europe this season for the Reds but both are out for the season and will likely miss Euro 2016 as well for respective countries England and Belgium. Mamadou Sakho is under investigation after failing a drugs test and is unlikely to feature.
It was Origi who began Liverpool’s incredible comeback in the second leg of their quarter-final with Borussia Dortmund but Klopp does have a ready-made replacement in Daniel Sturridge and he and his team-mates will have taken plenty of heart from knocking out the tournament favourites.
As a club, they’ve been semi-finalists in the UEFA Cup, Champions League and Europa League since the turn of the century and midfielder Dennis Suarez won the latter competition with Sevilla last year., though coach Marcelino will be without Leo Baptistao for this first leg while Jaume Costa and Mateo Musacchio both have thigh injuries and are rated doubtful.
Villarreal have taken just one point from their last three Primera Liga matches and that should give Liverpool some hope. The Merseysiders have won four of their last five in all competitions and scored 16 goals in the process. They’ve not lost a game in the Europa League this season and can set up another memorable night at Anfield by grabbing a draw in El Madrigal (23/10 in our Full Time Result Betting).
